Cat Tales
Cherries JubileeMarcia Lee Hartnell
Fused machine applique embellished with beads, yarn, and 3D elements and machine quilted. The whimsicality of the pattern spsoke to me. The cherry theme was influenced by my summers in the cherry capital, Traverse City, Michigan. Some of the pattern elements were changed to reflect cherries.
Weaver FantasyMarcia Lee Hartnell
Machine pieced background with fused applique accented with hand embroidery and beads. The background was finished waiting for inspiration. It was calling for additional embellishment. After a year of thinking and looking I found the butterflies and flowers.
Blue Flax with a touch of PoppyMarcia Lee Hartnell
Background of shredded fabric covered with tulle. Flowers added then another layer of tulle. 3D embroidered flowers & butterfly added last. This was inspired by the blue flax in my yard with an occasional poppy in the mix.
Bits & PiecesMarcia Lee Hartnell
Machine foundation pieced from scraps in 11″ strips that were joined, then sashed to make the quilt. The scraps were gleamed from many projects. Some were small fun designs. The bag of scraps seemed to grow larger as I worked.
Butterfly FantasyMarcia Lee Hartnell
Machine appliqué, embellished with yarn couching, paint sticks and beads. After completing a class project I wanted to try another piece using Cara Gulati’s 3D technique.
Spools (miniature)Marcia Lee Hartnell
Machine pieced and machine quilted. The size drew me to make the spool quilt. I always wanted to make one.
Farm YardMarcia Lee Hartnell
Paper pieced embellished with polymer clay (fences, beaks, ears, cats and tail), yarn couching, feathers, fused appliqué, beading and braided fiber. “Farm Yard” was fun to create with all the embellishments. Each time a new element was added another idea came to mind.
My Twisted Heart (miniature)Marcia Lee Hartnell
Machine pieced and machine quilted. The original stitching starts with a format almost twice the size of the finished twisted blocks.
Heads or TailsMarcia Lee Hartnell
Pieced blocks, with machine embroidered blocks embellished with polymer clay eyes & noses and beads. The Heads or Tails guild challenge inspired me to complete this. Adapted from an old pattern in my collection.
Stitches & KnotsMarcia Lee Hartnell
Painted fusible web embellished with a variety of hand stitching and different threads. The small decorative piece fit the box as if it was intended. Techniques learned in an NSNG class.
Lessons from MamaMarcia Lee Hartnell
Machine pieced and machine quilted on home machine. The blocks were completed in a quilt shop block of the month class series. The border was changed from the original pattern.
ColumbineMarcia Lee Hartnell
Fused appliqué embellished with free motion thread painting and machine quilted. This is a fabric painting of an original photo taken in Michigan inspired by classes with Shelly Brucar and Wendy Butler Berns.
Poppies Poppin’Marcia Lee Hartnell
Shredded fabric background with flowers & leaves cut out shapes on top covered with tulle then free motion stitched – 3D embroidered flowers added. This is an interesting & sometimes messy technique. Inspired by the poppies in my yard.
JubileeMarcia Lee Hartnell
Fused elements, machine quilted and embellished with angelina fiber and yarn. Developed from a design from an original photo of a specialty iris.
Rolling Hills in Shades of GreenMarcia Lee Hartnell
Paper pieced and appliquéd to background. Made for a guild challenge in Michigan titled “What I like about Northern Michigan”.
Sunflower LatticeMarcia Lee Hartnell
Lattice strips of bound fabric woven. Stem machine appliquéd, flowers & leaves machine embroidered. The flowers and leaves were completed in the hoop machine embroidery and attached. The woven lattice strips were bound then woven.
French BraidMarcia Lee Hartnell
Machine pieced. This quilt was made for charity using donated fabric then quilted by Jean Perkins in Michigan.
