Stitched entirely in Peyote stitch, which means one bead at a time is picked up and woven into the beadwork — very time-consuming! However, I loved watching the shapes and designs take place in this contemporary geometric design.

Winter Night Sky-AlaskaValerie Rodelli
This piece was inspired by the Aurora Borealis in Alaska while on a trip. It was the first time I saw the Northern lights and they were magical, never to be forgotten! I added the mountains to the piece to gain the broad perspective of the lights in the vast nighttime sky. Even the piecedContinue reading “Winter Night Sky-Alaska

Victorian EleganceValerie Rodelli
Crazy quilt blocks made by various makers in a guild. They were bequeathed to me by a member who has since passed away. I arranged them in a way to showcase each one and make a typical Victorian crazy quilt. The names of the makers are not available to me anymore. This was assembled inContinue reading “Victorian Elegance

Spring FlowersMellany Schumacher
My entire family has boys, boys, boys and when I saw this pattern I knew I wanted to make the pinkest, girliest quilt with it. The back is a super soft minky and it’s just waiting for the right baby girl to claim it.
Silly ghosts, tricks are for kids!Mellany Schumacher
These candy-colored ghosts were inspired by the background fabric. If you look closely you’ll see the colorful ghosts there. When one ghost ended up sewn in upside down I thought it was meant to be and left him. Silly ghost!

Vintage Thai and Indian silk fabrics, deconstructed from blouses made for my mother Ruth, were used to create the images of her purses and other appliques in theContinue reading “Mid-Century Memories

Taupe TrianglesAmy Spungen
I started this quilt on an informal retreat with some of my quilting friends, and every time I look at it I am reminded of what fun we had when we got together.
Great Blue HeronAmy Spungen
Great blue herons are my favorite birds, and I love seeing them when I kayak in the Skokie Lagoons. This portrait quilt of a great blue heron is inspired by a photo taken by Mike Dixon–not at the Lagoons, but it could have been!
Warhol DogAmy Spungen
My friend Joy sent me a photo of her foster dog, and it struck me as ideal pose for a pop-art quilt portrait. By tinkering with the settings in the photo app I was able to get the effect I wanted, and that photo is the basis of the quilt. Josh is a seeing-eye dogContinue reading “Warhol Dog
