Japan 1: Steps

Nona C Flores

Machine pieced and machine quilted. This is the first of 3 planned quilts using Japanese or Japanese-inspired fabric and traditional Western blocks. The quilting is by Sue DiVarco.

Carnivorous Leaf

Nona C Flores

A beautiful but lethal relative to the Venus flytrap–is it a prehistoric precursor (when bigger was better) or a genetically altered escapee from a laboratory?

Bird Nest–A Room with a View

Nona C Flores

A bird with bling deserves a ritzy nest with great views from all the rooms of her predator-free surroundings. This shape reminded me of woven bird nests that I saw in the Amazon that hung from branches looking like shoulder bags that could accommodate a coconut or a bowling ball.

Homage to Giverny

Nona C Flores

Fused appliqué, inkjet-printed photos on cotton and silk, TAP transfer of text, long-arm quilting. I have had the pleasure of visiting Claude Monet’s home and gardens at Giverny during different seasons, and have always found it enchanting, especially the Waterlily Pond. The long-arm quilting and binding was done by Sue DiVarco.

Spring Bouquet

Nona C Flores

Pre-cut fusible-backed appliqué, topstitched in black thread, long-arm quilting. I have long admired the appliquéd Baltimore Album quilts and was immediately drawn to this Edyta Sitar design. The black top-stitching was meant to look like pen-and-ink embellishment. Sue DiVarco did the beautiful long-arm quilting background.

Traces of Kandinsky

Iva Freeman

Machine pieced, machine quilted. I love to use the colors Kandinsky so often used in his work. Batiks, stripes, checks and dotted fabrics are so exciting.

In the Mood for Orange

Iva Freeman

Dictionary definition of orange: any of a group of colors that lie midway between red and yellow in hue. (Machine pieced. Machine quilted by Amy Parker.)

Ooh! These Colors!

Iva Freeman

This is an improv quilt inspired by Cindy Grisdela with dyed fabric by Frieda Anderson. (Machine pieced and machine quilted.)

On the Edge

Iva Freeman

Machine pieced. Machine quilted by Amy Parker. I love circular images that combine solids, prints and stripes.

Time is Tight

Iva Freeman

Machine pieced; machine quilted. I don’t usually use pink in my quilts, but this color spoke to me.
