Vienna’s Gift

Luan Wold

Machine pieced, raw edge appliqué, hand turned appliqué. This piece was done in a workshop with Rosalie Dace. Our inspiration was the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, a proponent of organic forms, color and broken up spaces.

The Heart of the Matter

Luan Wold

Raw edge appliqué, hand embroidered, beaded. Made from pieces in my “scrap bag”. Sometimes it’s fun to pull out pieces and see what evolves!

Red Whimsies

Luan Wold

Hand made “paper cloth” for background, raw edge appliqué, hand embroidered, buttons. “Paper cloth” is a fun new creative discovery. It is made by soaking a base of muslin with a glue/water solution and layering tissue and other papers, adding paint, etc.

Sea Life

Luan Wold

Machine appliqued and quilted. Embellished with shell buttons and sequins. Inspired by architectural motifs and marine life at the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas.

Diamond Solitaire

Luan Wold

Machine pieced and quilted. Inspired by a newspaper ad for a Tiffany diamond ring; the facets of the stone are like quilt pieces! There are 380 pieces, using 22 different fabrics.

Calla Lily

Luan Wold

I love the challenge of curved piecing, so I decided to see if I could do that technique on this piece. (All machine pieced except for the black stamen in the middle.)

Cat’s Eye View

Luan Wold

I took a “Matisse Magic” class with the fabulous Rosalie Dace. We studied Henri Matisse – his life, influences, techniques, design elements – the works. This piece was inspired by his “window view” paintings. (Raw edge collage; some fusing.)

Anger Management

Luan Wold

Commercial fabrics, machine quilted, embellished with hand-made beads as well as vintage buttons and purchased beads. Feeling frustrated one day I went to my studio and ripped fabric into strips, then fused them together horizontally. I then cut the whole piece into sections and reassembled them into this design.

Edge of Town

Luan Wold

This is my interpretation in fabric of a 1909 Kandinsky painting, “Winter Landscape”. I love his use of vibrant colors in non-traditional ways. (Raw edge collage. Machine and hand embroidered. Fused elements.)

The Way Home

Luan Wold

My parents died last year six weeks apart. I had been working on this landscape and got the idea for the shadow figures reuniting in the after life. They often held hands during their 73-year marriage. (Raw edge collage; hand dyed cheese cloth; tulle. Machine and hand stitiched embroidery. Sheer organza for shadow figures.)

Fork in the Road

Luan Wold

Commercial fabrics, machine quilted. I took my fabric “scrap bag” on vacation one year and “played” with the scrap shapes to inspire several small quilt designs.

Gaudy Gaudi

Luan Wold

Commercial fabrics, machine appliquéd and quilted, hand embroidered, embellished with beads. I became enthralled with the art and architecture of Antoni Gaudi during a trip to Barcelona in 2008. This design is inspired by some of the marvelous organic curved lines in his work.

Green Forest

Luan Wold

Commercial fabrics, machine quilted, hand embroidered, machine embroidered, embellished with beads. I took my fabric “scrap bag” on vacation one year and “played” with the scrap shapes to inspire several small quilt designs.

Little Red Church

Luan Wold

Commercial fabrics, hand painted, machine appliquéd and quilted. I was compelled to replicate this little church. In the actual photo it is dwarfed by trees going up and up this valley in Yosemite.

Barn

Luan Wold

Machine pieced, raw edge applique, free motion stitching, “confetti techniques” for trees. Having grown up in Central Illinois, I have always loved barns. (Inspired by image on Pintrest)
