Machine pieced, hand appliqued. I made a larger geometric piece out of Tom’s ties, but there are always scraps. Since I was simultaneously perfecting my leaf technique, this piece came about.

Christmas Gifts — Tom’s TiesMelanie Anderson
Paper pieced, pieced, free motion quilted. Tom’s ties — the gift that keeps on giving. Yet another quilt made from the scraps of Tom’s ties. pattern by Jen Daly
A Window on the Rose GardenMelanie Anderson
Machine “crazy” pieced and machine quilted. I’ve become obsessed with “reuse, recycle”. The roses in the quilt are made entirely from small scraps left over from other projects.
Summer on the Sleeping PorchMelanie Anderson
Machine pieced and quilted. I saw something like this in a Pottery Barn catalogue long ago. I put it together from scraps of other projects and really loved the result.
Scarlet Begonias – Grateful DeadMelanie Anderson
She had rings on her fingers and bells on her toes and I knew without asking she was into the blues; she wore scarlet begonias tucked into her curls; I knew right away she was not like other girls… (Pieced, appliqued, embellished.)
Roots and ShootsMelanie Anderson
Machine pieced and quilted. With a challenge piece, I hope that the fabrics will speak to me. These particular fabrics spoke of roots digging deep into the soil with just a bit of leaf growth above.
RamonaMelanie Anderson
My first grandchild, Ramona. The quilt holds both her birthdate (front) and her name (back). Machine pieced and quilted primarily from scraps of charity projects.
Mondrian: BlueMelanie Anderson
My dear neighbor is an interior designer and has given me many scraps and samples. This is a fun way to make them into art. I’ve always wanted to make a “Mondrian quilt” – this is the size to do it.
Evan’s Fish QuiltMelanie Anderson
Machine pieced & quilted. Evan originally requested birds but after looking at many bird patterns I determined that BIRDS would never get pieced! Evan picked many of the fabrics and pieced and ironed many of the squares. The back is made up of one of Evan’s favorite patterns: leopard. Reversible.
It’s a Beautiful DayMelanie Anderson
Machine pieced and quilted I was lucky enough to get a silkscreen of Obama’s head so I could participate in the inaugural challenge. What an exciting time!
Carolina’s FishMelanie Anderson
Machine pieced and quilted My daughter who normally ignores my quilt projects said repeatedly how much she liked this fish quilt—it became her going-away-to-college present.
DiabloMelanie Anderson
Machine pieced and quilted. I generally piece by trial and error. I also love using leftovers. So this is a “trial and error meets old shirts and leftovers” quilt.
A Million FridgesMelanie Anderson
A shout out to Lynn Dykstra for her amazing creativity — this is one of her many adaptations of classics that lends itself to leftovers from other projects.
Mondrian: RedMelanie Anderson
I’ve always wanted to make a quilt in the style of Mondrian. These upholstery samples make the perfect tool.
Who? What? Where?Melanie Anderson
I love to participate, hence my finishing this quilt. It was a true challenge, and I don’t necessarily think I rose to the occasion, but it did get DONE.
I’ll Finish That!Melanie Anderson
Hand and machine appliqué and piecing; hand quilting When the IQI challenge was announced as “Food, Glorius Food” it was very interesting to hear what everyone “saw” in their packets. I LOVE salad and always want to eat the leftovers.
Hidden River, City LightsMelanie Anderson
Machine pieced, machine appliqué, machine quilted. I love scraps and I love using them up. This quilt is made of, primarily, a box of leftover strips from another project. I was thrilled with the result, and Amy Parker quilted it for me.
Evan’s TwinMelanie Anderson
Machine pieced and quilted. This is a “twin” to my daughter’s quilt which we made together when she was eight. Evan, my five year old, and I put this together over the last year. Evan picked most of the colors and sewed some of the blocks
