Machine pieced and quilted. I was attracted to collections of fabric designed by Marcia Derst. They were not my usual type of fabric, but I was really drawn to them. I think I found the perfect pattern to make the most of these fabrics.

Wedding StarChris Deering
Paper pieced, free hand machine quilted. An ambitious project made for my son, Danny, and his new wife, MeiLin. It was displayed at their wedding reception in Oahu and they generously let me keep it long enough to show you.
ChrysanthemumChris Deering
Hand appliqued, machine quilted. I used some fabric I had previously painted (the background) and dyed (the flower and border). The diamonds on the right are my own addition.
Faceted JewelsChris Deering
Machine pieced and quilted. This was my IQI Quilt-In project for many years. Each January, I would grab this project off the shelf & work on it for most of the weekend. I think the top took 6 weekends to cut and sew – but that was 6 years!
Sue’s Heirloom GardenChris Deering
I used a commercial pattern but as all quilters know the fun is in the fabric. I chose colors and designs that would complement the home of my friend Susan.
Hawaiian HoneymoonChris Deering
Hand appliqued and hand quilted. This quilt was made for a co-workers wedding. The center is a pattern and my daughter worked with me to design the border.
Strip TwistChris Deering
My quilting group had a Quilt-A-Thon in January 2008. This was the project we made and we all brought fabric strips to exchange. There were some “orphan” strips at the end of the day that I adopted, so the quilt just kept growing!
Purple PinwheelsChris Deering
I won these blocks from an on-line quilting group’s monthly challenge. They come from all over the U.S. I tried a new quilting technique and had fun putting a different picture in each block.
Freeform CurvesChris Deering
In this class we learned to draw curves using our arm length as a compass. That was fun. Then we made registration marks on the patterns to assist in sewing the fabrics together.
Parallel UniverseChris Deering
Machine pieced and quilted. Designed by three engineers and rolled out over 6 weeks, this was a mystery quilt and such fun to do! I learned some new techniques. Liking larger quilts I added borders to make it bigger. It was an interesting process to figure out the exact measurements and angles of the differentContinue reading “Parallel Universe

Hand appliqué, Hand English paper piecing, Machine pieced and quilted Made as a Block of the Month program at Pieceful Gathering Quit Shop. While making this quilt I took a little time off and actually went to Scotland! And loved it!
Dancing RibbonsChris Deering
Paper foundation piecing, piecing and quilting by machine. A few of us in my weekly “bee” group challenged each other to make the center block. I enlarged the pattern 200% because the original was just too small! I like larger quilts so I added the borders.
Improv in OrangeChris Deering
Machine piecing and quilting. “Big Stitch” hand quilting. This quilt was the result of a 6 hour virtual class I took with the Modern Quilt Guild. Definitely outside my comfort zone, but I’m pleased with the result!
Sashiko and ButterfliesChris Deering
Hand appliqué, sashiko stitching and quilting I really enjoy hand stitching and this piece had all sorts of hand work.

Temari Ball – Layered DiamondsChris Deering
Made in an NSNG class with Jen Weber.
Coiled BasketChris Deering
This was the result of a class with Catherine Redford. When I arrived at the class with fabric of only one print and saw so many people had many different fabrics I was afraid mine would be boring. But I love the way it came out!
Hawaiian QuiltChris Deering
Hand applique and dense hand quilting. This was my carry-around hand work for many years and was stitched on in many places – including Hawaii when I was there for my son’s wedding.
