After completing a tumbler quilt top (using a template); I was unsure of what quilting design would best compliment the project. This sampler/table runner provided practice, and a clear design choice.

Hand needle turn applique, hand quilted, embroidery. This piece is hand needle turn applique and hand quilted. Original design for wreath and border. Flower and dragonfly from Mary Sorenson’s “What’s the Buzz” pattern.
East Meets MorrisCarole Bates
The medllion was from a Broderie Perse class with Anita Shakleford. The rest is my design. I used more than 2 miles of gold thread for the embroidery. (Needleturn hand applique, Broderie Perse, embroidery, beading and hand quilted.)

Machine pieced, machine quilted by Sally Evanshank I set the original design on point, used all star blocks rather than alternating stars and plain blocks, selected a scrappier background, and added the sashing. The result is a quilt that reminds me of Tuscany at night.

Foundation pieced; machine appliqué; machine quilted by Sally Evanshank The unusual lone star (a wonderful Karen Stone pattern) went through several color variations; I finally used the color wheel to finalize the scheme. The appliqué is an original design, using techniques learned from Ricky Tims and his hand-dyed fabrics.
