Liberating Scraps: Sea of Waves Times Two

Jan Sneesby Aaron

Paper pieced; machine quilted by Sally Evanshank, Windy City Quilting. About a decade ago, I made a small quilt from a block called Lucky Dip. But depending on fabric placement, making and setting the block in a quilt could produce quite a number of different designs and I always wanted to try working with it again. This past year I found the block in my computer software, but named Sea of Waves and an idea was born. Why not color it two different ways and use both in the same quilt? I played on the computer until I achieved a pleasing scrappy look. Then, I had fun liberating my stash, even finding a panel of fabric my mother brought back from Kenya more than 30 years ago (it is now part of the quilt’s back). Alas, though, scraps did not yield enough yardage for the sashing, borders and triangles in one color version, so I was “forced” to buy more fabric! Naturally, I did not use all of that yardage so the rest became scraps for still more quilts.
