Coming Apart at the Seams

Sarah Evans

Machine pieced and quilted, faced binding.

Coming Apart at the Seams was begun in late 2020 and finished in January 2021. It is made with 900 individual squares; the tiny piecing gave me a sense of control and
peace. As it came together the underside was far more interesting than the top. That’s what you see here. The top is flipped just as our world, exposing what is usually hidden. It feels unfamiliar, unorganized, even dangerous, The ugliness of humanity is on full display. Yet, for better or worse we are bound together and it’s these seams that help us see the beauty in the world. No matter how much it feels like we are coming apart at the seams, we are still very much in this together.
