I love the challenge of curved piecing, so I decided to see if I could do that technique on this piece. (All machine pieced except for the black stamen in the middle.)
Cat’s Eye ViewLuan Wold
I took a “Matisse Magic” class with the fabulous Rosalie Dace. We studied Henri Matisse – his life, influences, techniques, design elements – the works. This piece was inspired by his “window view” paintings. (Raw edge collage; some fusing.)
Anger ManagementLuan Wold
Commercial fabrics, machine quilted, embellished with hand-made beads as well as vintage buttons and purchased beads. Feeling frustrated one day I went to my studio and ripped fabric into strips, then fused them together horizontally. I then cut the whole piece into sections and reassembled them into this design.
Edge of TownLuan Wold
This is my interpretation in fabric of a 1909 Kandinsky painting, “Winter Landscape”. I love his use of vibrant colors in non-traditional ways. (Raw edge collage. Machine and hand embroidered. Fused elements.)
The Way HomeLuan Wold
My parents died last year six weeks apart. I had been working on this landscape and got the idea for the shadow figures reuniting in the after life. They often held hands during their 73-year marriage. (Raw edge collage; hand dyed cheese cloth; tulle. Machine and hand stitiched embroidery. Sheer organza for shadow figures.)
Fork in the RoadLuan Wold
Commercial fabrics, machine quilted. I took my fabric “scrap bag” on vacation one year and “played” with the scrap shapes to inspire several small quilt designs.
Gaudy GaudiLuan Wold
Commercial fabrics, machine appliquéd and quilted, hand embroidered, embellished with beads. I became enthralled with the art and architecture of Antoni Gaudi during a trip to Barcelona in 2008. This design is inspired by some of the marvelous organic curved lines in his work.
