Machine stitched. Hand embroidered using pearl cotton and beads. Raw edge applique. Additional embellishment: hand-drawn ink. Machine quilted. 100% Made in USA. The entire mini-quilt was made using cotton that is entirely sourced and manufactured in the United States. Inspired by 18th century botanical art. A whimsical portrayal of Maria Sibylla Merian’s work “Erucarum ortus” re-created in fiber art. “Transformation” begins on the left lower side of the quilt. Beads are sewn on the leaf to represent the eggs of the butterfly that will give birth to the caterpillar. The caterpillar later encloses itself in a cocoon where the dramatic change takes place. The cocoon is left a neutral color to emphasize the mystery of metamorphosis. 100% Made in USA.
